Turn a photo into a resin print: generate the model with AI, export STL, hollow and support it in Chitubox or Lychee, then cure and clean. Real settings and times.
Short answer
A resin print needs the same 3D model as a filament print, but the file preparation is different. Upload the photo to MakeIt3D and generate on Precise, which costs 3 credits and takes about 2 to 4 minutes. Download STL. Open the file in Chitubox or Lychee Slicer. Hollow the model to a 2 to 3 mm wall so it does not trap resin or crack from suction. Add two drain holes of at least 3 mm so the uncured resin can escape. Angle the model 20 to 45 degrees and add supports, because resin prints are supported from below far more heavily than filament prints. Slice, then print. From photo to cured resin print

Pick a photo with a clear silhouette
Use one object, fully in frame, shot at a 3/4 angle on a plain background. Resin reproduces small detail well, so a sharp, well-lit photo pays off more here than it does on a filament printer. Avoid transparent, reflective, or very thin subjects.
Generate on Precise
Upload a JPG, PNG, or WebP file to MakeIt3D. Run Quick first to check the photo works — it costs 1 credit and takes about 30 seconds. Then generate the final version on Precise for 3 credits and about 2 to 4 minutes. Precise builds up to 500,000 polygons, and resin is the process that can actually resolve that much detail.
Inspect the mesh before you slice
Turn the model in the browser viewer and check the back and underside. Resin printing is slower and more expensive per failure than filament, so it is worth regenerating from a better crop rather than slicing a mesh you are unsure about.
Download STL
STL is the format every resin slicer accepts. Chitubox, Lychee, and the slicers bundled with Anycubic and Elegoo printers all open it directly. STL carries no units, so confirm the scale after import.
Hollow the model
A solid resin print wastes resin and can crack from internal suction. In Chitubox use Hollow with a wall thickness of 2 to 3 mm; Lychee has the same function. Below about 1.5 mm the walls get fragile, and above 3 mm you are paying for resin nobody sees.
Add drain holes
A hollowed model with no holes traps uncured resin, which stays liquid inside and leaks later. Add at least two holes of 3 mm or more, placed on the underside or an area you can sand. One hole alone creates a vacuum and drains badly.
Angle the model and add supports
Tilt the model 20 to 45 degrees so each layer has a small cross-section and the peel force stays low. Then auto-generate supports and check the result by hand. Resin needs far denser supports than filament — every overhang and island needs one, or it prints into the vat.
Print, wash, and cure
Slice and print. A palm-sized model takes about 3 to 8 hours depending on layer height. Wash in isopropyl alcohol for 5 to 10 minutes to remove uncured resin, let it dry, then cure under UV for 2 to 5 minutes. Remove supports after washing but before full curing, while the resin is still slightly soft.
Resin-specific failures that start earlier in the pipeline
Most resin failures on an AI-generated model trace back to the mesh or the file setup, not the printer. Check these before changing exposure settings.
- A solid, un-hollowed model can crack from suction forces or simply waste most of a bottle of resin.
- A hollowed model with no drain holes traps liquid resin that leaks out days later.
- Thin AI-generated features such as antennas, fingers, or wires may be below the printable minimum of roughly 0.5 mm.
- Under-supported overhangs detach and cure as loose blobs in the vat, which can then damage the FEP film.
- A mesh with holes or loose floating fragments confuses the slicer — run its repair function if it reports errors.
- Uncured resin is a skin irritant. Wear nitrile gloves and work in a ventilated space when washing prints.
FAQ
Is resin better than filament for a model made from a photo?
For small, detailed objects, yes. Resin resolves finer surface detail, so more of what the AI reconstructed survives into the physical print. Filament is cheaper, less messy, and better for large or functional parts.
Which quality tier should I use for resin?
Precise. It costs 3 credits, takes about 2 to 4 minutes, and builds up to 500,000 polygons against roughly 20,000 to 40,000 on Quick. Since resin can resolve detail that filament cannot, that extra geometry is visible in the finished print.
Do I need to hollow the model?
For anything larger than a few centimetres, yes. Hollowing to a 2 to 3 mm wall saves a large amount of resin and avoids the suction forces that crack solid prints. Always pair it with at least two drain holes of 3 mm or more.
Can I use Chitubox and Lychee with a MakeIt3D model?
Yes. Download the model as STL and open it in either slicer, or in the slicer bundled with your Anycubic or Elegoo printer. Nothing about an AI-generated STL is different from one exported by traditional modelling software.
What does a resin print from a photo cost?

Why did my print come out as a blob stuck to the plate?
That is almost always supports or angle, not the model. Tilt the object 20 to 45 degrees and regenerate supports, checking that every island and overhang has one. If the mesh itself has floating fragments, run the slicer repair function first.
